You scroll past dinner ideas on Instagram every night. Maybe it is sheet-pan fish tacos with avocado crema, a one-bowl salad, or a cake you swear you will make someday. You tap save, and the post drops into the pile with everything else.
That pile is a weak cookbook. You cannot search by ingredient. You cannot scale servings. If the creator archives the post, the recipe can vanish from your saves too.
Recipe Shelf is for pulling those recipes into one place you can cook from. Below is a real example: a fish taco recipe that lived in an Instagram caption, now sitting in the app as a normal recipe card.
Why Instagram saves break down
Save was meant for "come back later," not for weekly meal prep. In practice you get:

No real search. You are scrolling, not filtering by protein, cuisine, or cook time.

No clean structure. The ingredients and steps sit in one caption block while you are at the stove with flour on your hands.
•
Fragile links. A deleted or hidden post is gone for you as well.
From caption to recipe card: Quick Import
A lot of food posts still put the full recipe in the caption, under the hook line and above the hashtags. That text is enough for Recipe Shelf to build title, ingredients, instructions, servings, and times.

Open the Instagram post and expand the caption.

Long-press and copy the recipe block (ingredients, steps, and any intro you want to keep). Extra emoji and "link in bio" noise is fine.

In Recipe Shelf, tap Add Recipe, then Quick Import.

Paste the caption, tap Import recipe, then review the fields.
5.
Fix anything that looks off and save. It is now in your library like any other recipe.
Quick Import handles messy line breaks and stray hashtags better than you might expect. If a line lands in the wrong field, edit it before you save.
When the recipe is not in the caption
Some posts hide everything in a carousel graphic. Screenshot the slides and use Photo Upload so OCR can pull the text. If the creator links out to a blog, check whether the site is on our
supported sites list and paste the URL. For reels with no text, check the caption, a pinned comment, or their site before you fall back to Manual Entry while you watch.
Stop treating Saved as long-term storage
Instagram is still great for discovery. It is a poor place to keep the meals you actually cook. Moving a handful of saves into Recipe Shelf takes a few minutes, and you get search, scaling, and a library that does not depend on a feed.
